Dermoscopy is the examination of the skin using an optical device called a dermatoscope. As one of the first to practice dermoscopy in Israel (since 1996), I am considered one of the most experienced and senior in the field.
The dermatoscopic examination allows a skilled examiner to notice very subtle findings in the skin and skin lesions, such as cannot be detected with the naked eye. In the field of early detection of skin cancer and in the field of dermatology in general, dermoscopic examination is very important in immediate and accurate diagnosis in a way that often eliminates the need for a biopsy and histological examination to diagnose the nature of the lesion or the type of disease.
In this way, the patient is often spared both the inconvenience associated with performing a biopsy and the wait until receiving an answer, and in other cases, lesions are identified in which there are subtle changes that cannot be discerned in any other way, which may indicate a problem and cause the lesions to be excised or biopsied at the earliest stages possible.
